I was looking for something fun to do with my mom when I was visiting her in Lake Oswego. The Thai cooking class at fuAsian turned out to be a great choice. I signed up for the three course Thai cooking class through their website ( fuasiancatering.com ). There was plenty of parking behind the building and there were six of us in the class on a Monday evening. I can't believe I learned to make three of my favorite thai dishes in one class. It is the perfect menu and I feel really confident that I can replicate the recipes at home. I learned so much about thai ingredients, which ones to buy, which ones to make from scratch, and some of those unique herbs, spices and vegetables that intrigue me in the grocery store. I am going to recommend this class to my family that lives in Portland and to my family that visit. Thank you to Thu Ha and best wishes on your new cafe hours. I think the Lake Oswego community will love your delicious food!

AMAZING Valentine's dinner at FuAsian... Upon arrival, we met ~5 other couples, also dining at FuAsian that night. The restaurant owner, Thu Ha, along with two chefs, prepared an unbelievable meal. Each dish was unique and beautifully presented. The open kitchen allowed us to see parts of the meal being prepared, and Thu Ha explained each dish as it came. Our seven course, prix fixe meal included the following: Squid and cucumber salad (perfectly fresh!) Assorted sushi and sashimi (several varieties - beautifully presented! And the fish was fresh and delicious!) Crab Cakes (gluten free and full of CRAB, not fillers!... plus a mayo-free dipping sauce) Orange duck soup (perfectly flavored with small mushrooms etc) Chicken satay with peanut sauce and side salad Pork & herb mini sandwiches (these reminded me of banh mi, but the "bread" was this amazing, soft sponge-like cake shaped like a taco...) Fresh fruit for dessert With each dish, we wished our stomachs were bigger! Everything was unique and freshly prepared. Both red and white wine were served as part of the meal. Altogether, this was one of the most special Valentine's meals we've had... From start to finish, we probably spent 4 or 5 hours on this incredible dining experience. Incredible food and attentive service, without any pretension! Highly recommend calling this place to schedule a dinner!!! (This is a belated post, as we were slow to download the photos!)

Took a sushi class and learned a lot. From making healthy, tasty Miso soup, different types of sushi, and the nutrition info on the ingredients. Thu Ha, knows her food, and teaches healthy and affordable options..Fun class, and you learn how to make Sushi!

This was a pretty awkward experience. Not what I was expected. The instructor was friendly but I'm not really sure she was prepared to teach the class. The instructor made us stand in front of everyone to try the techniques because there was only really one station. The venue was also really cramped. Not at all what you would need to teach a class of fourteen.

Thu Ha was a lovely host and instructor in our cooking class. She explained with great detail what she was doing and why she was doing it, really making it stick in your head. As well, she sent the recipes ahead of time so we knew what we were making. The food was out of this world! I've now take two of her classes and look forward to taking another one. The class takes place in her cozy storefront restaurant and is very casual. It's not super spacious and not set up like a text book cooking class, but everything you need is right there. Everyone gets involved as much or as little as the would like. Thu Ha is very accommodating. She even accepted my Groupon past its expiration date. This is no classroom, it's more real life. It's a fun intimate setting. At the end of the class you can purchase many of the Asian food supplies that aren't so readily available in any store. But she also uses everyday items and explains their availability, quality, and uses very well. Not for the high maintenance snobby types. More for the funloving interesting types!

Thu Ha clearly has a great deal of knowledge regarding nutrition, kitchen economics and local sources for products. She encouraged the use of fresh local produce and the best quality food one can afford. She also recommended contacting her directly to schedule classes. Our group of 4 enjoyed her personal approach and we look forward to taking more cooking classes with her. There is no doubt to the value of the cooking classes that she teaches. Be confident that Thu Ha gives value and shares her culinary and cultural expertise. Another group member mentioned, "It's very good to have the recipes available on line for future use." I had a great time at Thu Ha's class and was so excited to be able to prepare chicken satay in my kitchen that tasted (almost) as good as what we made in class. My husband requested that we make it again soon. We don't eat out much but do love Thai, Vietnamese and sushi dishes. Our attempts to make them at home before have been acceptable but her cooking tips raised the flavors to a whole new level. I want to return to your classes so that I can learn to make it all of the dishes that she will teach. All in all, an excellent class!

I took a sushi class here last night. The owner and instructor was incredibly knowledgable. Although different from other cooking classes I have taken, I really enjoyed this one. She didn't waste time explaining things that we could have learned ourselves (cooking rice, for example). I left with a basic understanding of rolling sushi, and I will definitely be attempting it at home in the coming weeks. I highly recommend attending this class (or any classes for that matter) with a friend.

We've only eaten here... quite a few times. This year's Valentines Day dinner topped them all -- 7 great courses. All innovative, all delightful. Thu Ha is a delight, and what she cooks even more delightful. Not totally traditional (quinoa is NOT classic East Asian cuisine) but wonderful. Highly recommended. Just be aware this is not a conventional restaurant but something, much much more

A friend suggested that we take a cooking class that was offered via Groupon and so began our cooking lesson on a Thursday night in May. It turns out there were about 15 people in our group that night and we all got to participate. The chef Randy runs this cooking school with his mother and sister and they came up with this idea to teach as everyone always wants to know how to make Thai food. During this lesson we learned to make the salad rolls that are often served at Thai restaurants as well as the peanut sauce that accompanies them. We learned to make hot and sour soup and chicken pad thai. The space is somewhat small so we chopped the vegetables in the kitchen at the counter for the wraps and then we were seated at dinner tables to make the salad rolls. The best part was while he instructed us on the preparation for the soup we were able to eat the rolls. We all assisted in chopping and setting up for the making of the soup and then we were able to eat that as well. We took turns 2 people to a pan (some 3 because of odd numbers) at the gas range making up the pad thai. We could season to taste. A tip for the timid, man up and go first because guess what you're eating your dish first. We waited until last and we were eating at about 9:30PM. Class runs from about 6:30 to 9:30 PM depending on which class you take. They have a schedule on their website. Also, if you take a class from them you receive a discount on other classes you take. They have supplies available for purchase at their location and you can stop by and buy when they are open, which is typically in the evening. I bought the rice paper for the salad rolls and some sauce. Most people bought the pad thai noodles that they sold there. They take cash, check, visa, master card, etc. A great experience and one I would do again.

This class was a Christmas present from my wife and believe me, it is such a great idea to give someone an experience like this! I love to cook, I especially love spicy, saucy foods. I've asked the owners of Asian restaurants, "When are you going to let me come in and learn from you!?" They have all kindly nodded yes, but turned me down. So, I was looking forward to this class as the probable solution to my disappointing attempts at producing really great tasting Asian dishes. My expectations were completely blown out of the water! Thu Ha's methods of teaching; her choices of which examples to prepare, her ingredients and her hands-on style, leaving no one behind, is so simple, repeatable and delicious --it's just stunning! Thu has great depth of experience, she is completely approachable and fun. You cannot go wrong, you can only learn and enjoy the process. She gave us several basic dishes that all revolve around a limited number of variables, so we were able to learn how what we did to make each dish carries over to make another. We were able to compare how simple differences in ingredients change the same basic dish into something very different (like lemon grass chicken vs. ginger chicken). This is really useful information and it cannot be overstated. By not bombarding us with complexities we saw how some basic concepts and techniques can be used to create complex dishes. She is brilliant in her teaching methods! Everyone had plenty of incredibly delicious food to eat and felt extremely encouraged to go home and cook for their friends and family. I cannot recommend Thu Ha's cooking school enough--for beginners and for people who cook a lot, it's all there. Her catering must be spectacular! I can't wait to take another course from her.

Our small office (6 people) decided to do a cooking class for our latest outing. The experience we had at fuAsian was fun, educational, and of course delicious. The owner and chef, Thu Ha Dinh, prepared a delightful menu including dishes that she prepared, as well as dishes we prepared ourselves. She started by showing us a very simple and effective way of making goi cuon (salad rolls) while we munched on some thit heo quay (roasted pork belly). Next we all gathered around the hot pot and learned some simple tricks that make miso soup very tasty. While we sipped away at our miso soup, she was nice enough to share some very special smoked salmon with us, which we all agreed was among the best we've had in the pacific northwest. Finally we prepared both nigiri and maki sushi, all of which was delicious, and again we all agreed that we have a newfound respect for itamae. Overall the experience was very educational, the food was exceptional, and the price was more than fair. I would highly recommend fuAsian to anyone looking for a cooking class, especially with a group of friends that don't mind diving in and learning new things.

I attended Thai curry cooking class with FuAsian. It was amazing. I enjoyed the class and the food. We got to eat what we prepared. It was awesome food. Thu Ha is very knowledgeable in this field and has very high energy and enthusiasm in teaching this class. I highly recommend this class for people interested in Asian cooking

So I heard of this place via Groupon. I had no idea what to expect going into it. I signed up for the two course meal but the class was canceled. The owner was really great at communicating with me! She allowed my wife and I to take a sushi class that was already booked. The sushi class itself was amazing! We had just a fantastic time as she was funny, relaxed and the overall environment was amazing. There were 13 of us and we were all able to to do everything. We made miso soup, shrimp and ahi poke sushi, shrimp and smoked salmon roll, tempura shrimp and unagi roll (angry dragon). The class was 4 hours long, but it flew by. We even got green tea and mountain berry ice cream at the end of class. You know she is a real chef because she doesn't have any recopies written down but it is all in her head and she cooks by tasted. We each got plenty of food as my wife and I were both stuffed after the class. Also the dishes we learned were restaurant quality dishes. She took her time to explain everything and you can really tell she is passionate about food and teaching! I would highly recommend this class to anyone, from a beginner cook to an experienced one. They provide a relaxed and fun atmosphere and of course knowledge to make some amazing sushi! Groupon or not, this place is worth it and I want to go back for the other classes they offer.

My husband and I took a great Sushi making class yesterday. We were there for 4 hours with 3 others and learned more than we expected. We can't wait to try the recipes for Miso soup and sushi at home as Thu Ha made the instructions easy and fun. Definitely recommend this class.

We attended the four course Asian Cooking Class tonight. Food was fabulous and easy to prepare. Thu Ha was personable and a great instructor who was very knowledgeable about food preparation, nutritional content and value, and simple ways to prepare very flavorful food! We loved this experience and can't wait to try more from Thu Ha's kitchen. We highly recommend this class. A lot of fun and well worth the price.

My wife and I took a cooking class here and it was a lot of fun and we learned a great deal allowing us to replicate these "now easy" receipes at home - in the real world. Thu Ha demystified the recipes to not be too difficult to make myself - without instruction.

Fu Asian might come off as a ethnic insult if pronounced improperly but its message is distinctively different. This small restaurant located in the heart of downtown Lake Oswego speaks a different language through its concept, one without a menu. No menu? Yes. The owner who's name is pronounced 'two' only accepts reservations and asks about any food allergies. Next you show up and are served a five course sampling of Vietnamese dishes from her homeland for $30. For those who demand control over their lives this concept may not be welcomed, I however thought it was refreshing to allow anticipation and surprise rule my experience. While $30 isn't necessarily cheap the portions were adequate making this a great way for a group to come together and dine. The courses we had were as follows: 1. Squid Salad - I'm not a huge fan of squid because more often than not it's cooked improperly, so regardless of flavor I don't like eating rubber. This however was cooked very well with a tender delicacy, bright acidic flavors and spices, it reminded me more of ceviche. 2. Duck Soup - This might have been my favorite course, not only did it help warm my bones but it contained large pieces of dark meat, noodles, button mushrooms and a flavorful broth kissed with orange zest and brandy. 3. Shrimp Tempura with Hollandaise and Grand Marnier - This was a simple but comforting dish of lightly fried shrimp and a coating of sauces. Honestly I could have done without the hollandaise mostly because I'm not a fan of mayonnaise. It's kinda like when served on sushi, I don't feel it belongs. The Grand Marnier was a nice touch as it gave a sharp sweetness to the dish without overpowering the shrimps flavor. 4. Roasted Duck breast with Duck As jus - Ahhh just the way I like it, juicy, meat served on a plate and nothing else. Ok it was garnished with a few scallions to add some color but my focus was securely on the duck. She explained to us how it was prepared using a combination of brandy, herbs and spices pushed under the skin then roasted. The meat was succulent and its flavors penetrated into the light but crispy skin. Oh and the jus was awesome! A salty combination of rendered duck fat, soy and spices. After we finished I asked if she was going to pour out the sauce? She replied yes and I fired back, no please, put it into a to-go cup! Mmm duck fat, a condiment always welcomed in my house. 5. Beef Stir Fry - This classic dish wrapped up our meal, I'm not sure what cut it was but based on its flavor and tenderness I suspect it had been marinated prior to cooking. While simplistic in its design this meat lover would happily take med-rare steak in place of a dessert. However I do feel like some may want a dessert option to break up all the proteins. It's also worth mentioning that she currently does not charge a corkage fee, therefore our sake and wine from home was much enjoyed with our dinner. Otherwise your drink options can be limited unless you know a thing or two about wine. She has an array of wines from Napa, Italy, Argentina and the NW which surprisingly are offered at a flat rate of $25 per bottle. 'Two' is sweet and personable, it's obvious she wants to please everyone who enters through her doors. With a few tweaks I have no doubt that this concept will catch on and be a welcomed addition to diners in Lake Oswego. She even told me about plans to teach cooking classes and how to make proper pho. As someone who loves a nice hot bowl of pho during winter I will certainly be back for that! Oh and she expressed it's pronunciation is ph'a not ph'o, see I'm learning something already. So if you're someone who likes surprises, learning something new or favors an intimate atmosphere go check out Fu Asian where the experience is anything but an insult.

Fu Asian is a hidden gem with a unique dining concept: a customer and chef-driven modern-Asian menu. Call ahead to let the chef know any dining preferences or restrictions. She'll tailor a multi-course menu to suit you for quite a reasonable sum. Don't miss the shrimp dish if it's on offer - amazing. The soup was light yet complex. Dare I say it's worth the trek from Portland? There, I said it. You won't be disappointed.

The owner, Tuha, is a master chef, plain and simple. She makes amazing, complex food without being pretentious. My husband and I went last night for a 4 course offering, and I seriously could have eaten her soup with shrimp dumplings in it every day of my life and died happy. We also had Grand Marnier shrimp, oh man, sweet, salty, crunchy goodness...and some kind of steak marinated in brandy with a subtley spicy sauce that I would have drank if it would have been appropriate. She also made us an eggplant/tofu dish with perfectly cooked rice that she said she makes for her own family. I could feel the love and care she put into these dishes for us. She doesn't actually open at a certain time, but if you call and make a reservation, she will just make you dinner. It's $25 a person, a total steal if you ask me. The quality of the ingredients is amazing, she does local/organic from a co-op. Call her for your next special dinner, or any dinner for that matter. You won't regret it, I promise.

I, my husband and 8-year-old daughter had the pleasure of taking one of fuAsian's cooking classes recently and would highly recommend it. We learned how to make several different dishes - pad thai, tom kah soup, and fresh salad rolls. Not only did we enjoy a full three course dinner, we also took home recipes, master cooking tips and some house-made pad thai sauce. My daughter loved participating in the prep and has a newly discovered love for salad rolls - yumm! My husband picked up a new technique for making moist delicious chicken, and I took copious notes about recommended portioning, sauces, proper ingredient selection, etc., which we've already put into practice. Thank You, Thu Ha and team, for the unique experience, your kindness inviting us to the class as a family, and the good food.

Went to Fuasian last week and enjoyed a six plate meal with a bottle of sake. Each plate was better than the next and owner was friendly and extremely helpful. She went into detail about each dish and gave us an additional dish to try. $30 for the courses and it was completely worth it. Definitely coming back for more.

Owner/chef created a special meal - we were 7 with several gluten-free, some vegetarian, some loving fish and some not liking seafood. The owner-chef could not have been more accommodating or personable (she told us most of her business is catering and she enjoys having the restaurant so she can talk with people. Wonderful tastes. Everything was great, unique flavors and textures. I can't wait to take visitors to this small easily-overlooked restaurant.

Our groupon for the Thai cooking class offered by fuAsian was set to expire in a few days, so last night we used it, and I was thrilled with the experience my husband and I had! The class was taught by the owner & main chef of the restaurant, who was FANTASTIC! We were told, however, that she doesn't usually teach the class anymore; instead it's taught by her main chef Randy, who had the night off because it was his birthday. We learned to make Salad Rolls, Tom Kha Soup, and Pad Thai, three very standard dishes found at every Thai restaurant. My husband and I LOVE Thai cuisine and frequent Thai restaurants often, as well as cook with Asian flavors at home, so my only concern going into the class was that it might be too basic for us. But while the dishes were basic, the instruction provided was extremely detailed, and the knowledge and passion the owner has for the ingredients (using fresh and local as often as possible and not taking shortcuts) and for cooking was inspiring. She also has over 20 years experience in the restaurant industry, so she was able to give much insight into the shortcuts many Thai/Asian restaurants take when it comes to the preparation of their dishes, and what dishes SHOULD and SHOULDN'T taste and look like. The class was hands-on, and she gave great instruction regarding her methods in preparing the food as well as discussing her favorite brands of ingredients to use. She also shared many great techniques that make a HUGE difference in the prep of these dishes. My hubby had never been able to quite get his salad rolls right before, and after last night's class, we couldn't believe how easy it really is! We now have some tricks up our sleeves. :) I could go on and on, but even without a Groupon discount, the class is definitely worth every penny!

I had Thu Ha prepare a private dinner party for me and 13 friends and it was absolutely fabulous. We had spring rolls, salad rolls, sushi, as well as other appetizers. We can't say enough wonderful things about our experience. We had a surprise 80th birthday party and it went off perfectly, thanks to the support and outstanding service provided by the owner, Thu Ha. Her cooking is amazing and the food is healthy tasting, and beyond delicious. I highly recommend using this establishment for your catering needs or for cooking classes with friends Thu Ha is a lovely, gracious woman who immediately makes you feel welcome. Thank you, Thu Ha for making this special occasion come off so well. We had a great time.

Just had the privilege of going to a private dinner with friends at fuasian. We were blown away by the care and thought that went into the beautiful food and loved that it was cooked with a healthy twist. The chef and owner took her time with us, was super friendly, and explained all about her food and the techniques she used. The atmosphere and food were both great. Can't wait to go back!!! Wow.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time taking the Thai cooking class. The class was different from other classes I've taken. There wasn't really a recipe, but how to really make it, how to test for the right flavor and what to do to achieve it. I was shown the little things that make it right. Like what rice paper to buy, the temp of the water needed etc. I fully feel confident I can make the same thing at home without any problem. I was surprised at how simple it is to make pad Thai. This was the second class I've taken on how to make pad Thai. This class showed me all I really needed to know. I like how I learned about how restaurants take shortcuts, and how to do it the correct way, better than at the restaurant. I fully expect to take another class, and hope to bring along some friends. The only reason I gave it four out of five stars, was that the instructor was a little too preachy in regards, to organic, gmo's, natural health. I personally was fine with it, but I can see how others would be offended. That said, this was one of the best cooking classes I've ever taken.

Incredible dining experience!!!!! All of the ingredients are high quality and fresh, the dishes are inventive and delicious, and Thu Ha (owner / chef) makes you feel so welcomed!!!! Our most recent custom dinner included a non-stop sequence of amazing dishes: squid salad, grilled mussels with broth, orange duck soup, and the most tender saffron chicken I've ever tasted. Everything was truly amazing and cooked to perfection. This restaurant is a hidden gem in Lake Oswego!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially while this place has received such great reviews in the past, but NO. Nope. Nu-uh. No thank you. Let me explain. . . . We purchased (we, as in me and my main squeeze) a cooking class for two people Monday, April 21, 2014, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. OK, with that being said the class did not start till 7:00 p.m. and ended around 10. When my man and I got there, we found a place to sit; which by the way the space is very small and when coming in we had to awkwardly shuffle around this bench that was propped in front of the doorway. If you had any immobility for whatever reason you would have much difficultly. So after we find our spot, we sat and waited...waited some more. Finally the assistant, Chef Dave, comes out of the wood work and mentions that they forgot they were having a class tonight. Our main chef, Chef Thu Ha, comes in with bags of groceries from Albertson's...I'm going to sound so snooty, but dayum if we're paying good money for a cooking class, you're going to go to Albertson's to purchase the supplies? - no thanks. That's just the beginning folks. So we don't start cooking till about 7:30, and when I say cooking it's more of a cooking demo. We are watching Chef Thu Ha and Chef Dave chop, cut, stir, and mix. I found this rather humorous, but someone in our class mentions "I don't really know how to cook and this is a cooking class, can you tell me what exactly you are doing, how much we should be adding, it looks like you don't use measuring spoons or cups?" Chef Tuah replies, "I just eye ball." Ok..... While Chef Thu Ha was nice I will not be taking another cooking "class" from fuAsian. I guess I went in with the expectation that each of us would be preparing and cooking our own meal. Also, the fact that there was so much disorganization really put a sour taste in my mouth. PS: fuAsian is opening a cafe/deli, in the same place they hold their cooking "classes." We were told they will use the best of ingredients for their cafe/deli, but for cooking classes they just run to the nearby market. That's lame.

Took a cooking class. It was a nice intimate evening with a small group of people. I learned a few things and enjoyed the company. If you are true foodies you might find the class a little light on the instruction. For me who just likes to learn about new anything it was perfect. I can make pad thai at home but now i know I can get the sauce she sells at her restaurant and make it anytime without screwing up the sauce.

Took a cooking class there a few months ago, LOVED it! thought it was the best money spent on a cooking class. learned to make Pad Thai, Salad rolls and tom yum/tom ka soup. Then learned that she makes by reservation only apt's for dinner. you pay a very low per person cost (we chose $25pp) you can do more for more fancy fair, and had around 8 or 9 courses sent out. She shops the day of, and is an AMAZING chef!!!! I saved so much money doing dinner with her and able to have 8 friends all alone in the place. Cant beat that. Truly is a MUST do. You will go back over and over, just as we all plan to. Her food is seriously unbelievable.

I took a cooking class here using a groupon deal. I came with an open mind and had brilliant time! I am now cooking all three of those dishes I learned at home, much to the joy of my family! Chef Thu Ha (or just say Two) is a lovely and fun teacher, she is personable, entertaining, warm and is always looking to offer healthier ways to prepare the food, using organic ingredients and offering tips to lower carb count and up the protein or veggies. After we prepared our dishes we all sat down to eat our meal. The flavors were so delicious, much better than if I had ordered them at my favorite Thai restaurant near my house! She is very knowledgeable and fussy about her ingredients and freshness. For some who may have had complaints I don't even know what to say. The place is a little small, but I had no complaints whatsoever, my experience there was fantastic. I cannot wait to come again for cooking classes and a meal. But this time I can't wait to bring my son and husband!

We went to FuAsian with a group of 18 of us for a birthday get together. The owner was very friendly and the BYOB aspect is amazing. The selection of food was perfect. We had a group where half loved sushi and half didn't want much to do with it and they selected a very nice combination to make everyone walk out of there happy. Great place, we will definitely go back.
